Five Tips for Better Beauty Sleep

We've all heard of the age-old tale of the importance of "beauty sleep," but did you know there is science behind that timeless adage. In fact, high-quality sleep has a direct, positive impact on your skin health. Our bodies perform incredible tasks even when we're fast asleep like rebuilding muscle, cementing new memories, and of course, promoting cell regeneration.

Lack of sleep can cause some serious skin problems such as:
  • Dark undereye circles
  • Deeper wrinkles & fine lines
  • Saggy, droopy skin
  • Swollen eyes
  • And more!

It's time to snooze your way to younger skin. We have five tips on how to get better sleep & glowing skin.

1. Aim for at least 7-9 hours of sleep every night.

Our bodies do miraculous things while we sleep. For our body to do its job, it needs time! Throughout the night, our skin goes through many different healing stages. As you begin to fall asleep, your body releases melatonin, which not only makes you sleepy, but it also repairs skin from damage incurred during the day.

As you drift into a deeper sleep, your body releases even more skin-loving hormones like HGH. Human growth hormones are responsible for repairing DNA cells and maintaining brain function, in addition to speeding up the skin's repair process. Throughout the night, the regeneration of your skin cell speed can double or even triple. This increase means your skin is saying goodbye to damaged, aging cells and hello to fresh, youthful skin.

2. Pamper yourself with a nightly skincare routine.

Embrace some self-care and maintain healthy skin while you sleep by sticking to an anti-aging skincare regimen. Consistency is the key player. Your nightly routine should always include at least:

  • A gentle, exfoliating cleanser
  • A balancing toner
  • A rich moisturizer

You may be asking, "if my body is doing so much to turn over cells at night, do I even need to do anything to help it along?" The answer is yes. While your body is doing some pretty awesome things, there are ways to make your beauty sleep even more productive.

As the night goes on, your skin becomes exceptionally porous. While that makes nighttime great for absorbing skincare products, it also means that your skin is losing intense amounts of moisture. That's where your nightly moisturizer comes in.

The right skincare product is vital. In addition to providing your skin with crucial nutrients, skin cream acts as a barrier, trapping moisture in. With a moisturizer like eb5's Intense Moisture Anti-Aging Cream, your skin will remain hydrated all night, leaving you with plump, glowing skin when you wake up.

3. Try to turn down the lights & disconnect from electronics at least 45 minutes before bed.

All-day long, we are exposed to harsh blue lights that can disrupt our hormonal system affecting our sleep patterns. Melatonin production is interrupted by these lights we see throughout our day to day routines. From our phones to computer screens, TVs, and tablets, these lights make it difficult for our body to unwind and begin relaxing into sleep.

By disconnecting from electronics and other stimulating distractions a bit before you hit the hay, you set yourself up for a more restful night's sleep. All-natural herbal tea such as valerian root and chamomile can also help encourage melatonin production. Tie this disconnect time into your nightly skincare routine for relaxing evenings.

4. Keep your skin & the air hydrated all night long with a humidifier.

Hydration is crucial for healthy, youthful skin. With a proper moisturizer, plenty of water, and a humidifier, you'll never have to worry about waking up with dry, cracked skin again. You can also keep a glass of water by your bed as a convenient way to ensure you're staying hydrated from the inside and out.

How does a humidifier benefit your beauty sleep? Humidity levels of the air have a direct effect on the appearance and maintenance of your skin. By using a humidifier in your bedroom every night, you can control and maintain a healthy humidity level throughout the evening.

5. Change your pillowcase more often.

If you are prone to oilier skin or have dealt with acne, blackheads, and other blemishes in the past, changing your pillowcase might help alleviate some of these frustrations. For most, pillowcases should be changed every week. For those with an oilier complexion, experts suggest switching your pillowcase out for a fresh one every two or three days to avoid exposing your skin to hidden germs.
